WhatsApp’s Username Feature Puts an End to Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp’s Username Feature

WhatsApp is experimenting with a fresh feature that could redefine how users connect, introducing usernames. Like Instagram, this feature will allow users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers, offering an added layer of privacy and security. No longer will users need to expose their numbers to chat with someone new. WABetaInfo first uncovered the upcoming feature in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Now, Meta is reportedly extending it to select iOS beta users as well.

According to the screenshot shared by the publication, users can set their usernames directly from the app’s profile page. The username field will accept alphanumeric characters and a few special symbols, but each username must be unique. Once set, users can be identified by their username rather than their phone number. If someone initiates a chat through a username, the phone number tied to that account will remain hidden unless willingly shared.

Interestingly, WhatsApp extends this feature to individuals and businesses, allowing everyone to personalise their usernames. Moreover, conversations started using usernames will still enjoy the platform’s signature end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy remains paramount. In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new reply bar feature. This will let users send media, like images, videos, and GIFs while viewing content in a conversation.

WhatsApp continues to enhance its platform with new tools, recently adding Telegram-style Channels, launching a native iPad app, and rolling out UPI payments for business owners. WhatsApp’s rapid evolution shows that Meta is determined to keep the app at the forefront of messaging technology, constantly adding features that improve the user experience.
