A new update is rolling out to WhatsApp, which brings fresh changes to its Status feature that lets users share updates with their contacts for 24 hours. These changes are very identical to the way Instagram Stories work, with users now being able to like and reshare the updates of others. The features are being gradually introduced around the world, so they may take time to show up for you.
The first big feature of this WhatsApp update is the introduction of Status likes. Just like Instagram, every Status will have a heart at the bottom-right corner that your contacts can tap to let you know that they like your Status. Instead of a red heart, though, this one will be green, keeping with the colour scheme of the app. One more thing: these likes will be completely private, meaning only the person getting them on their Status will be able to see them.
Then, there are private mentions that act like the tagging feature on Instagram, but not quite. While tagging someone on Instagram lets everyone view the tagged person’s name, on WhatsApp, it will be a private affair. Only the person who’s tagged will be notified about it, and they can then choose to reshare the Status or ignore it.
This new update to the WhatsApp Status feature sounds very much like a bid to bring it more in line with Instagram Stories. While announcing this update, WhatsApp has promised more changes in the future as well. “We’ll be bringing more features to Status and the Updates tab over the next few months to make it easier to stay closest to those who matter most. Let us know what you think!” the company said in a blog post.
But one wonders why this didn’t happen sooner. After all, Stories are among Instagram’s most powerful and popular features. As we said, the new features to WhatsApp Status are being rolled out gradually and should reach your device over the next few weeks.
