MediaTek is on time with its flagship chipset launch, with the Dimensity 9400 having been announced for upcoming smartphones. The 3nm SoC boasts leading-edge core hardware that’s not just designed for facilitating on-device AI but also for enabling support for tri-fold smartphones that are reportedly on the anvil.
The eighth-gen MediaTek NPU 890 onboard the Dimensity 9400 chip supports the training of lightweight AI models on-device. MediaTek also says that the new NPU brings 80 percent faster large language model prompt performance and that it supports AI video generation. Moreover, it even offers a developer framework for creating agent-based applications, giving developers and manufacturers plenty of space for innovation.
Coming to the specifics of the Dimensoty 9400, it’s built on the 3nm process and is claimed to be up to 40 percent more power-efficient than its predecessor. This efficiency is achieved with the help of an octa-core architecture that’s headlined by a single Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.62GHz. And then, there are three Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores handling the less heavy tasks. Compared to the Dimensity 9300, this setup brings 35 percent faster single-core performance and 28 percent faster multi-core performance.
As for graphics, they are handled by a new 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU that ships with 40 percent faster ray tracing performance. This high-end unit is capable of scaling its visuals to support tri-fold screens. Huawei’s Kirin 9010 has already showcased such a capability on the company’s Mate XT Ultimate that was launched last month.
On the camera front, the specs maintain the same beefiness. The Dimensity 9400 is capable of supporting sensors of up to 320MP sensors and video capture of up to 8K at 60fps and a 10-bit bitrate.
Along with this launch, MediaTek has also announced a partnership with Google. As part of it, the Dimensity 9400 will be optimised to support Google’s Gemini Nano with new multimodal capabilities to bring generative AI experiences across the Android ecosystem. The Dimensity 9400 is all set to debut late this year through phones made by Vivo and OPPO.
