iPhone 16 Series Pre-Orders – Plus Model Booms, Pro Models See Lower Demand

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16 series kicked off on September 13, and early demand for most models has been robust, according to market analysts. Among the lineup, the iPhone 16 Plus is reportedly the top performer, experiencing the highest growth in pre-orders compared to its predecessor. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are seeing comparatively lower demand despite shorter delivery times and a significant increase in available units—up to 100% more than the previous generation.

iPhone 16 Series Pre-Order Trends

In a recent blog post, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo highlighted that both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models have shown higher year-on-year (YoY) demand. The standard iPhone 16 has seen a 10% increase in pre-orders during the first weekend compared to its predecessor, while the iPhone 16 Plus has experienced an impressive 48% surge in demand despite having longer delivery times than the iPhone 15 Plus.

However, overall, first-weekend pre-orders for the iPhone 16 series are estimated to reach around 37 million units, reflecting a 12.7% decline from last year’s numbers. A key factor behind this drop is the reduced demand for the iPhone 16 Pro models. The pre-order performance of the iPhone 16 series is largely attributed to the introduction of the new tetraprism lens on the Pro models, alongside Apple maintaining a stable pricing strategy from the previous generation.

Kuo also pointed out that the absence of certain Apple Intelligence features—Apple’s advanced AI suite—at launch could be contributing to the lower demand for the iPhone 16 Pro models. Features like enhanced writing tools, an upgraded Siri, the Clean Up tool, and the Image Playground were previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June. While some of these features are expected to roll out with the iOS 18.1 update next month, others have been delayed until next year.

Despite these challenges, Kuo suggested that Apple could still boost sales of the iPhone 16 series, especially with the full release of Apple Intelligence and the upcoming holiday season. The company is expected to adopt aggressive marketing strategies to drive demand for its flagship models in the coming months.
