At Apple’s much-anticipated September 9 event, the tech giant unveiled the new Series 10 Apple Watches and introduced a fresh colour option for the Watch Ultra 2. However, fans hoping for the debut of an Ultra 3 or a new Watch SE were left waiting. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, a third edition of the Apple Watch SE is indeed on the horizon, but it’s not expected until 2025.
Gurman notes that Apple’s design team is working on transitioning the SE’s materials from the current aluminium body to a plastic one. This shift is likely to drive the price down while offering a range of bold, vibrant colours. Drawing a comparison to the playful hues of the iPhone 5c, Gurman suggests that the upcoming Watch SE could appeal to younger users, with parents appreciating the lower price tag.
Currently, the 2022 Watch SE is quite affordable, with prices starting at $250 for the 40mm model and $280 for the 44mm version. Even the cellular upgrade, at just $50 more, is competitively priced. However, the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE, priced at $200, presents strong competition, so Apple might consider further price adjustments to remain competitive.
Beyond the colourful redesign, the next Watch SE could serve a practical purpose for families. As more countries implement smartphone bans in schools, the Watch SE could be an appealing alternative for parents wanting to stay connected with their children. Apple already offers a feature that allows parents to set up a Watch SE for their kids, even if the child doesn’t have an iPhone, using the parent’s phone instead.
In addition to the design overhaul, Gurman reports that the next SE model is likely to receive a chipset upgrade. While the current Watch SE (2022) uses the Apple S8 chip, which is also found in the Series 8, it isn’t a major departure from the S6 chip from 2020. Apple has been tight-lipped about the advancements in the new S10 chip, focusing mostly on AI improvements. Whether the new SE will sport an S9 or S10 chip will likely depend on availability and pricing.
As for the Ultra series, Gurman predicts that the Apple Watch Ultra will move to a two-year update cycle. While the Ultra 2, released in 2023, was only a minor upgrade, the Ultra 3, expected in 2025, may not bring significant advancements either.
