Apple has officially lifted the curtain on its latest addition to the iPhone family, and while many anticipated the arrival of an iPhone SE4, what we got instead is the iPhone 16e. Positioned as the most affordable entry into Apple’s latest generation of smartphones, the 16e has some big shoes to fill.
With the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro earning top marks for their stellar audio and camera performance, the prospect of a budget-friendly alternative delivering similarly impressive results is certainly intriguing.
However, the question remains: Will the iPhone 16e redefine the budget smartphone market? And perhaps more importantly, where are the long-awaited updates to Apple’s HomePod and AirPods lineups?
The HomePod Drought Continues
Another Apple launch event has come and gone, and yet again, there’s no sign of a new HomePod. While the introduction of the iPhone 16e is an exciting development, it’s hard to ignore the glaring absence of updates to Apple’s smart speaker range. Whether it’s a follow-up to the HomePod Mini or a refresh of the full-sized model, a new iteration is long overdue, especially with Apple gearing up to integrate its latest Apple Intelligence software into future devices.
As we process the unveiling of the iPhone 16e, teased by CEO Tim Cook ahead of the event—the lack of any HomePod or AirPods-related news leaves us wondering. Of course, this only fuels the rumour mill, and speculation is bound to intensify as we await official announcements on the next-generation AirPods Pro or an upgraded HomePod, both of which are rumoured to debut later this year.
Where’s the AirPods Max 2?
For those eagerly anticipating the AirPods Max 2, the wait continues. Expectations have steadily built since whispers of an update first emerged last September, but Apple’s latest event provided no answers. If a launch were imminent, we’d typically expect to see more substantial leaks or insider reports, yet there’s been radio silence. Could Apple surprise us with an unexpected drop? Perhaps, but at this point, it seems unlikely.
The original AirPods Max received a minor refresh last year, with new colour options and a switch to USB-C connectivity. However, a full-fledged successor remains elusive. Industry chatter suggests that when the AirPods Max 2 finally arrives, they’ll be equipped with a more powerful processor, refining an already premium audio experience.
But considering the modest updates of late and the continued popularity of the current model, we may be waiting a while longer before Apple pulls back the curtain on its next-gen over-ear headphones. For now, the spotlight is on the iPhone 16e. But as Apple fans, we can’t help but wonder, what’s next?
