The 2024 Paris Olympics have officially begun on 26th June 2024. Like every Olympic commencement, it features a grand opening ceremony where every participating country is showcased. The opening ceremony gives them the opportunity to highlight the beauty of their country’s traditional clothes in a stylish, modern manner. Their uniforms gorgeously tell the story of their history and fabrics.
Let’s take a look at some of the uniforms
Mongolia 🇲🇳
Designer: Michel & Amazonka
The uniforms adorned by the Mongolian team feature vests with detailed embroidery. You can observe several elements like the Soyombo symbol, and the mythological Gua-Maral deer. The designers commented that the uniforms took approximately 20 hours.
Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
Designer: Lovi Ceylon
The team representing Sri Lanka dressed up in silk and natural materials. It displayed designs that paid homage to the country’s traditional clothing culture through hand-made embroidery and beadwork inspired by 19th-century royal court attire.
Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) 🇹🇼
Designer: Justin Chou
Blending modernity and traditional beauty, Justin Chou’s design for the Chinese Taipei team featured tailored suits by the hands of local artisans. They used banana fibre woven fabric and accesorised with a lapel pin of Taiwan’s national flowers. The suits are also inspired by Paul Chaing’s “Mountain Range of Taiwan” painting.
Czech Republic 🇨🇿
Designer: Alpine Pro
Czech Republic proudly wear their national flag. The attire at the opening ceremony consists of a blue blotted and white trench coat inspired by Czech ‘baloňák’ coat. Underneath the trench coats, they adorn gradient t-shirts and polos, and blue trousers. The athletes also have a green bandana with blue markings, whether it’s attached to their wrist, neck or any other part of their body.
Haiti ðŸ‡ðŸ‡¹
Designer: Stella Jean
Patterned with a painting by Philippe Dodard’s titled “Passage”, it blends modernity, style and tradition seamlessly. The women adorn the vibrant pattern with a woven shirt and a belted blazer. Meanwhile, the men don light blue field jackets inspired by the traditional Haitian Guayabera shirt.
Ireland 🇮🇪
Designer: Laura Weber
Ireland’s all-white outfits honor the country’s century-long involvement in the Olympic Games. Each athlete’s jacket features a unique embroidered patch on the sleeve, displaying a design embellished with beads, sequins, and stones. Additionally, the jackets include a shamrock brooch, made from four embroidered four-leaf clovers, as a symbol of good luck.
