Best Thriller Movies to Stream on OTT Platforms, From Prime to Netflix

Thriller is one of the most interesting genres in the film industry. It maintains suspense, is unpredictable, and attempts to play with your mind. The curated list of films is a masterclass in storytelling designed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Whether it’s psychological manipulation or eerie mysteries, thrillers are where you find a dose of danger. Here, a threat lurks, and nothing is ever quite as it seems. These films are available to stream on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.

Let’s go on a cinematic journey together with these thriller movies

Oldboy (2003, 2 hours)

Director: Park Chan-Wook

Oldboy is a mind-bending film that strips the human heart bare (according to film critic Roger Ebert). After being imprisoned for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su, brilliantly portrayed by Choi Min-Sik, seeks revenge against his captor. His journey towards this unveils his past and how his actions have had some grave consequences. The plot twists are guaranteed to make your jaw drop to the floor. An American remake was released in 2013, and surprisingly, a Hindi one named Zinda. The influence of this film reaches the sky.

Available on Prime Video.

The Platform (2019, 1 hour 34 minutes)

Director: Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia

While this dables more in the science fiction horror genre, The Platform is a thriller because of the social commentary it embeds into its storyline. The film follows Goreng who wakes up in a tower-like holding facility, dubbed “the pit.” We quickly learn what happens in the pit, with its complex rules and even worse structure. However, the reason why everyone is in this facility remains a huge mystery until it all clicks together. It is a brilliant commentary on social class, blended with brutality and science fiction.

Available on Netflix.

Forgotten (2017, 1 hour 49 minutes)

Director: Jang Hang-jun

This South Korean thriller is yet another masterpiece and a hidden gem I personally recommend. Forgotten is exactly how a thriller should be – unpredictable. It follows a family moving into their new house and the two brothers, played by Kang Ha-neul and Kim Mu-yeol, are supportive and have a close bond. However, one night changes their dynamic entirely. The events unfolded after that point are mind-blowing yet slightly devastating. Who can the brother trust now?

Find out by watching on Netflix.

Darlings (2022, 2 hours 14 minutes)

Director: Jasmeet K. Reen (Directorial Debut)

This thriller blends dark comedy into a revenge story perfectly. Darlings is a story of a wife Badrunissa “Badru” Ansari–Sheikh, played by Alia Bhatt, plotting revenge against her abusive husband. It is an articulate commentary on the lives of wives under abusive marriages. While it is an unrealistic depiction of what a domestic abuse victim can do, it can be cathartic for those who have survived or endured the same. Bhatt and her on-screen mother, Shefali Shah, have incredible chemistry as a daughter-mother duo who are risking their lives to teach an abuser a lesson. It is an underrated watch that you will certainly enjoy.

Seven (1995, 2 hours 7 minutes)

Director: David Fincher

Inspired by the seven deadly sins, Seven or Se7en, is a thrilling and horrifying film with brilliant performances and plot twists that make it a classic. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play detective partners chasing after a serial killer whose murders are motivated by the seven deadly sins. The grotesque scenes are almost worth turning the TV off but trust me, you will want to wait for the whole ride. It is certainly one of the best serial killer movies out there, and remains the must-watch on everyone’s list.

5 Japanese Horror Movies You Must Watch

Japanese horror is one of the most terrifying genres in the film and horror industry. Its intense visual effects, suspenseful narrative, and unique backstories guarantee a thrilling ride. The curated list of 5 Japanese horror films comes from a Japanese movie buff who personally recommends them. They mostly revolve around the supernatural and the psychological.

The 5 scariest Japanese horror films that you will lose sleep over

Pulse (2001)

Pulse is a dark and bleak Japanese film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The Japanese title literally translates to “Circuit,” a reference to the centre of horror in the film—the Internet. Japan’s horror films have a trend of techno-horror, mostly cautionary tales of electronic usage. Pulse is a classic example of this. The film also explores isolation and helplessness as the ghosts invade Tokyo and more people begin disappearing. The film gained a cult following worldwide, and its popularity granted it an American remake by Wes Craven. The seemingly disconnected stories begin to thread into a complicated and impossibly tragic story.

Ring (1998)

This list wouldn’t be complete without Ring. The original always beats the American remakes, and Sadako’s story is infinitely more sinister. In another techno-horror film, Hideo Nakata introduces the curse of a videotape. Nakata couldn’t have predicted how big Ring would be, but its influence is still felt today. The investigation behind the cursed tape reveals Sadako’s tragedy and why the tape has so much power. The film follows the leading couple trying to save their son from the curse, unveiling themes of parental love, technological advancements, and abuse. It gained a cult following, hailed as one of the most terrifying films, and also has several American remakes.

Battle Royale (2000)

This brutal and unforgiving film has one of the most groundbreaking concepts in the industry. Quentin Tarantino covets it as his favourite film of the 21 st century. Battle Royale has an immense amount of violence, with scenes too grotesque to watch with both eyes open. It also has some of the most psychotic characters in the history of horror. However, it’s a rather timely topic. The film revolves around Japanese high schoolers forced into fighting to death by a Japanese totalitarian government. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, Battle Royale was the high-grossing Japanese film for 6 weeks straight.

Noroi: The Curse (2005)

In the world of Japanese horror, nothing has frightened them more than demonic entities. Japanese mythology involves several types of demons and Noroi: The Curse has one of the best possession stories in the genre. Following Masafumi Kobayashi, the paranormal investigator gets more than he bargained for. The main villain, Kagutaba, is visually horrifying yet memorable. An interesting choice by Kōji Shiraishi, the director, was to involve the actress Marika Matsumoto as herself in the film.

House (1977)

This film has one of the most unique narratives in the genre. House is an experimental film in the horror-comedy subgenre. While the film did negatively in Japan, its global release in 2009 brought it a cult following. Nobuhiko Obayashi’s fresh and distinct style enhances the crazy narrative of the film. He draws inspiration from his daughter, Chigumi, who drew from childhood fears. It never goes how you expect and that’s exactly how horror should be – the unpredictable. Obayashi nails the unpredictable part of horror with House. The visuals and use of colours are a delight to anyone looking for a fun experience over being scared.

Even today, we see adaptations and even a famous Broadway musical. Featuring memorable songs by British rock star Elton John, breathtaking animation, and a compelling narrative, The Lion King is a beloved classic. It also blends grief and recovery with the tragic death of Mufasa, and the sheer shock on Simba’s face could never be replicated. Netflix May Launch A Free Plan with Ads in Asia and Europe

Netflix is reportedly contemplating the introduction of a free, ad-supported plan, allowing users to access its content without a subscription fee. This move, currently under consideration, would target select markets globally, particularly in regions where other free TV networks already offer similar services.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix is exploring this strategy in Asian and European markets. The proposed plan would provide access to Netflix’s extensive library, with advertisements interspersed throughout the content. This initiative aims to broaden Netflix’s audience by attracting viewers who are accustomed to free, ad-supported television.

This wouldn’t be Netflix’s first foray into free streaming. In 2021, the company introduced a free plan for Android users in Kenya, which was later discontinued. Presently, Netflix has no intentions of launching this new free tier in the US, where the lowest-cost option remains the ad-supported plan, priced at $6.99 per month.

Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s President of Advertising, noted that the existing ad-supported plan has garnered 40 million active users globally, a significant increase from 5 million users the previous year. Additionally, 40 percent of all new sign-ups in regions offering this plan opt for the ad-supported version, highlighting its growing popularity.

The introduction of a free plan could significantly boost Netflix’s viewership while simultaneously attracting more advertisers. This strategy aligns with Netflix’s broader advertising ambitions, which include the development of an in-house advertising technology platform set to launch by the end of 2025. This platform is expected to offer advertisers innovative ways to purchase ad space, gain insights, and measure the impact of their campaigns.

In summary, Netflix’s potential free plan represents a strategic move to expand its audience and enhance its advertising revenue. By targeting markets where free, ad-supported TV is already popular, Netflix could tap into a new segment of viewers while providing advertisers with a fresh and dynamic platform. If successful, this initiative could reinforce Netflix’s position in the competitive streaming landscape and pave the way for future innovations in ad-supported content delivery.

His list of performances was unlimited with his versatility. To remember him, let’s look back on his best performances. But remember that this hasn’t even touched the surface of it.

Here are some of his best films, showcasing the breadth of his talent.

MAS*H (1970)

One of Sutherland’s breakthrough roles was in Robert Altman’s dark comedy MAS*H, where he played the mischievous yet compassionate surgeon, Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. He contrasts perfectly with Fonda’s fiery performance. The film is a tense, character-driven drama highlighting Sutherland’s ability to subtly convey deep emotions.

Citizen X (1995)

Sutherland’s portrayal of Colonel Mikhail Fetisov is marked by a transformation from a detached official to a committed ally in the pursuit of justice. He brings a quiet strength to the role, providing a strong presence in the face of the systemic obstacles posed by the Soviet regime. His nuanced performance captures the complexities of a man navigating the treacherous waters of Soviet politics while striving to bring a brutal killer to justice. Sutherland’s performance in Citizen X earned him critical acclaim, including winning a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.

Path to War (2002)

Path to War is another HBO film directed by John Frankenheimer, set in the turbulent period of American politics during the Vietnam War. Sutherland’s performance as Clark Clifford, the senior advisor of President Lyndon B. Johnson, is a study in subtlety and gravitas. He effectively conveys the growing disillusionment and moral struggle of a man who initially supports the administration’s policies. However, he gradually becomes a voice of reason against the war. Sutherland’s ability to depict Clifford’s internal conflict and principled stance against the escalating conflict provides a great counterpoint to the film’s perspective.
