Swades (2004)

From casteism to social inequality, Ashutosh Gowariker addresses these with sensitivity and diligence. Shah Rukh Khan plays an NRI employed by NASA who returns to India in search of his nanny. As the name suggests, the lives of the scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) inspired the story of Mission Mangal. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

It would be a miracle if you haven’t already watched this one. Directed by Aamir Khan, Taare Zameen Par is a devastatingly beautiful film. It focuses on the eduction system of India and its flaws through the character of Ishaan. Ishaan’s dyslexia causes his parents to send him to boarding school, but this happened to be the right move for him. While the scene caused us significant childhood trauma, Khan’s character helping him overcome his disability and encouraging his artistic side is an incredible story.

3 Idiots (2009)

This list would be incomplete without 3 Idiots. Another classic featuring Aamir Khan, this movie is one for the ages. It will always be remembered as one of the best motivational films out there. Its influence even reached a global scale, so it only proves how incredible and well-written it is. It’s a satirical take on the Indian educational system, especially how deeply it affects the mental health of the students. It includes one of the most devastating scenes in Bollywood, and also a bit of a cautionary tale to take it easy. It’s a must-watch for some motivation, so get to it!

Chak De! India (2007)

This powerful story will change your life. Chak De! India is the motivational film with a brilliant storyline, dramatic soundtrack, and outstanding performances. It is filled with passion and fervor depicted through the Indian girls team who work to the bone to finally qualify. They initially get overlooked by the Indian Hockey Association, something not new to them, but Shah Rukh Khan’s character, an ex-hockey player, takes a chance on them. The dynamic between him and the girls’ team is natural, filled with support, and shows how just believing in someone can give fruit to something special.
