Vivo V40 PRO Indepth Review
Design and Display
The Vivo V40 Pro showcases a sleek design with a premium feel. The device boasts a glass back with a wave pattern, which has been made using magnetic crystal, giving it a unique finish pleasing to the eyes. Due to its glossy back design and sparkle pattern, the fingerprint is not clearly visible. The curved edges and slim profile make the phone comfortable to hold and use with one hand. It is 7.58mm thick, one of the thinnest devices available, with a 5500mAh battery fitted inside. Despite its slim design, the vivo V40 Pro is equipped with an IP68 rating, which means it is highly resistant to dust and water ingress. This rating ensures that the device can withstand dust, dirt, and sand, as well as being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. This level of protection provides users with peace of mind, especially in outdoor or rugged environments. Available in two colour options, the one we received is the Ganges blue, and the other is the Titanium Grey, which has a matte back design.
The display is a standout feature, offering a 6.7-inch curved AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Thanks to AMOLED technology, the display resolution of 1260 x 2800 pixels provides sharp and vibrant visuals with excellent colour accuracy and deep blacks. HDR10+ support further enhances the display quality, making it perfect for watching high-definition content.
Performance
The Vivo V40 Pro boasts impressive performance thanks to its MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ chipset, designed to deliver flagship-level power. This octa-core processor, combined with up to 8GB of RAM, ensures seamless multitasking and efficient handling of resource-intensive applications. Users can choose from storage options ranging from 256GB to 512GB, providing ample space for apps, photos, videos, and other data.
Operating on Funtouch OS 14, based on Android 14, this device offers a clean and customizable user interface. While it comes with preinstalled third-party apps, users have the option to uninstall them.
One of the standout features is the device’s ability to smoothly switch between applications without any noticeable lag, even when multiple apps are running in the background. Additionally, 8GB expanded RAM enables seamless multitasking, particularly when managing multiple heavy applications and needing to switch between them swiftly.
Gaming
Gaming on the Vivo V40 Pro was impressive, thanks to the inclusion of the powerful Dimensity 9200+ chipset and the stunning 120Hz display. The device performs well when running graphically intensive games like BGMI, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Genshin Impact. I tried playing BGMI at ultra graphics settings, and it performed well, allowing me to react quickly in the game and enhancing my overall gaming experience. What’s more, the phone boasts a dedicated gaming mode that not only optimizes performance but also minimizes distractions and enhances touch responsiveness, allowing for a more focused and responsive gaming session.
Moreover, the Vivo V40 Pro features an effective cooling system that effectively manages overheating, even during prolonged gaming sessions, ensuring consistent and reliable performance. This combination of high-end hardware, thoughtful software optimizations, and efficient thermal management truly sets the Vivo V40 Pro apart as a top-tier gaming smartphone.
Camera
One of the Vivo V40 Pro camera system’s most impressive features is that it is co-engineered with ZEISS. The triple-camera setup includes a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens. ZEISS optics are used in the Vivo V40 Pro camera, and they do offer some advantages.
The camera user interface (UI) is similar to other vivo phones running Funtouch OS. It includes several features such as Pro mode, Micro movie mode, super-resolution mode, supermoon, and more. Despite the phone having a 50-megapixel rear camera, the final output is 12-megapixel in size after pixel binning. Additionally, the front camera output is around 14-megapixel even though it has a 50-megapixel camera.
When it comes to camera quality, the daylight shots are excellent. To ensure a good dynamic range, it’s recommended to enable the HDR option, which automatically switches on HDR according to the shot. The camera can focus quickly. The 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera does a great job and can also shoot macro. The portrait mode with the 50-megapixel sensor has excellent edge detection. The phone has ZEISS optics and 6 ZEISS Style Portrait options.
The camera performs well in low-light conditions, capturing lots of details with minimal noise. The optical image stabilization (OIS) helps to keep the images steady. In very low light, the night mode automatically switches to ultra-dark mode, which takes a few seconds to process. The supermoon mode offers up to 50x zoom, but it’s not comparable to flagship cameras.
The 50-megapixel AF front camera is also good in daylight. The portrait shots from the front camera were also good, with good edge detection, even though they use software.
The V40 Pro is perfect for video enthusiasts. It can record 4K resolution videos at up to 60 fps using both the front and rear cameras. It also offers a ZEISS cinematic portrait video option. With ZEISS branding, the vivo V40 Pro features professional-grade photo and video settings, enhancing overall videography.
Battery
The Vivo V40 Pro has a 5,500mAh battery, which offers a full day of usage on a single charge, even with heavy use. The device supports 80W fast charging, allowing just 30 minutes to charge the battery up to 70%, which is convenient for users who are always on the go. Unfortunately, the Vivo V40 Pro doesn’t support wireless charging, which could be considered a negative point, considering that most pro models these days come with it.
For the 4K video test, I watched the full last episode of House of Dragon season 2 with OnePlus Buds Pro 3 earbuds connected via Bluetooth. The one-hour episode drained only 9% of the battery.
Verdict
The Vivo V40 Pro is a great mid-range smartphone that stands out in design, display, performance, and camera. Its slim and premium build quality make it an excellent choice for users seeking high performance without a high price tag. Additionally, the inclusion of fast charging and a massive 5500mAh battery ensures that the phone can last a full day with moderate use; sadly, it misses wireless charging. Overall, the Vivo V40 Pro emerges as the best smartphone in the V-series, solidifying its position as a strong contender in the competitive 50K market segment.
