Review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 foldable smartphone

Design and Build

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 continues to improve the design with a more refined and premium look. The device features flat sides with an aluminium brushed finish, which allows the device to get rid of fingerprints, which was the problem with the previous generation. The compact and stylish clamshell design easily fits into pockets, almost similar to the previous Samsung Galaxy Flip5. The hinge mechanism has been further refined, offering a smoother and more durable folding experience. The device is constructed with a combination of aluminium and glass, ensuring a premium feel while maintaining robustness.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 features the same display size and resolution as the previous Galaxy Flip5 smartphone launched a year ago. Samsung decided to keep the display as it is already the best display available for a flip phone. The major improvement seems to be in brightness, which is 2600 nits, which makes the display viewable even in bright sunlight.

The main display is a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 2640 x 1080 pixels resolution. This high-resolution screen delivers vibrant colours, deep blacks, and impressive brightness, giving an immersive viewing experience while watching videos, playing games, or viewing social media content. One of the standout features of the Galaxy Z Flip6’s display is its 120Hz refresh rate. This adaptive refresh rate adjusts the refresh rate based on the content viewed. It provides smooth scrolling and fluid animations, making interactions with the device feel incredibly responsive without affecting battery life.

The crease in the middle of the display, where it folds, is less noticeable than in previous generations, thanks to refinements in the hinge mechanism and display technology. Regarding usability, the Galaxy Z Flip6’s display offers several multitasking features tailored for the foldable form factor. Flex Mode, for instance, splits the screen into two halves when the device is partially folded and clicked on the fold button, allowing users to interact with two apps simultaneously. This is particularly useful for video calls, content creation, and multitasking on the go.

Samsung’s One UI, based on Android 14, offers a clean user experience, with additional features tailored for the foldable form factor. Having extensively tested the Galaxy Z Flip6 software extensively, One UI 6.1.1 greatly enhances the overall user experience with its thoughtfully integrated features. Flex Mode stands out as a game-changer, allowing for easy interactions like watching videos on the upper half of the screen while reading comments on the lower half and transforming the device into a mini laptop for hands-free video calls. Multi-Active Window elevates multitasking by enabling simultaneous use of multiple apps. This makes productivity tasks such as note-taking during video conferences seamless and efficient. With its customizable widgets, the 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display provides quick access to essential functions without opening the phone.

While gaming, the Galaxy Z Flip6 can handle all games easily. I played games like BGMI, Call of Duty Warzone, and Asphalt on the Z Flip6, which truly stood out. BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) ran flawlessly on the Z Flip 6, delivering high graphics and responsive controls. Even after playing the game for over 40 minutes, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor ensured no lags or stutters, even during intense firefights. Call of Duty Warzone, also known for its demanding graphics and fast-paced gameplay, was equally impressive on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. In addition to gaming performance, the Z Flip 6’s battery life held up well under the strain of gaming, allowing for extended playtime without frequent recharging.

Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 now has a new 50-megapixel sensor and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, making it a substantial upgrade from the previous model. The primary camera captured stunning images in daylight with excellent dynamic range and accurate colour reproduction. Thanks to the upgraded sensor, the level of detail and clarity was remarkable, whether it was landscapes, cityscapes, or portraits. The ultra-wide sensor enabled wide shots without compromising on quality.

In low-light conditions, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 performed decently. The Night Mode effectively reduced noise and enhanced details, resulting in bright and clear nighttime photos while preserving the natural ambience. However, it sometimes struggled to capture clean images in challenging lighting conditions.

The front-facing camera, with a 10-megapixel resolution, was perfect for selfies and video calls. Selfies taken with the front camera were detailed and well-exposed, with subtle AI enhancements improving skin tones and features without making them look unnatural.

The battery life of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has improved slightly compared to its predecessor. It has a 4000mAh battery supports fast charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging. I found reverse wireless charging very useful when my iPhone 15 had a low battery and no power banks or sockets available. The Galaxy Z Flip6’s wireless power-sharing slowly charged my iPhone, giving it enough battery to last for the rest of the session. On a full charge, the device comfortably lasts a full day with moderate to heavy usage. After conducting a movie test, we observed that the battery level of the Galaxy Z Flip6 decreased by 27% while watching a 4K movie at full brightness for an hour.

AI

Samsung has introduced Galaxy AI into the Flip series with the Galaxy Z Flip 6, making it a smarter and more intuitive device. My experience using the AI-powered features on the Flip 6 has been remarkable. The AI-powered camera system offers intelligent scene recognition and real-time adjustments, ensuring optimal settings for every shot. Features like Super Resolution Zoom and Night Mode, enhanced by AI, allowed me to capture stunning photos effortlessly. Call Assist can answer calls with a voice assistant and provide a text format of the audio from the other end. At the same time, Chat Assist streamlined messaging with context-based quick replies and smart suggestions. The AI Interpreter offered real-time translation for text and voice, making travel and cross-language communication seamless. Note Assist converted handwritten notes into searchable digital text, organizing my notes efficiently. Photo Assist provided real-time suggestions for better framing and composition. There are many more AI capabilities on the Galaxy Z Flip 6, making the device extremely smarter and tailored to my needs, adding convenience and efficiency to my daily tasks.
