OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: A Bold Return to the Flagship Arena?

Over All Rating 3.5/5

Price Starts From  ₹ 99,999/-

PROS 👍

CONS 👎

Gone are the days when flagship phones were available at prices hovering around the Rs 60,000 mark. With Apple, Google, and Samsung constantly pushing the envelope in that department, other players have no qualms about raising the prices of their flagships. Priced at Rs 99,999, the OPPO Find X8 Pro is of the same ilk. What’s interesting is that the phone marks a comeback for the Find series in India after four years.

The parent company has chosen to bring it back at a time when the vivo X200 Pro and the OnePlus 13 are already here – both devices having been cut from the same cloth as the OPPO handset. This full review should offer you a deep insight into the device, but please note that we’ll also be making a thorough comparison between the three handsets, which will be out in a few days. That said, let’s jump straight into the review.

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Worth its Premium Price Tag?

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Design

OPPO Find X8 Pro Quick Button

The rear of the device follows the same design principle as its predecessor, the Find X7 Pro. A large circular camera housing is centred at the top, with the rest of the surface being largely clean. OPPO has done well in giving the phone a mere 8.24mm profile, but its camera module adds another 3.01mm of depth to the whole affair. Amidst an otherwise plain rear surface, this module sticks out due to its minute detailing. The ‘H’ logo from Hasselblad occupies a prime spot around the four 50MP cameras sitting around it. Curved glass is spread along the front and the back, but I will say that the Space Black variant features such heavy frosting on the back that it’s hard to distinguish whether it’s glass or plastic. On the sides, the aluminium frame stands out due to its elegant feel, making it easier to carry the rather heavy 215-gram device around.

On the front, OPPO uses a quad-curved screen that creates a perfect edge-to-edge impression. This display is blemished by a hole-punch for the front camera but the panel’s large 6.78-inch size ensures that there’s no hindrance to the viewing. Do note that the fingerprint scanner is located at the very bottom of the screen. It didn’t cause me any hindrance, but it’s worth pointing out.

The phone’s frame is made of aluminium, and the Alert slider is not its only noteworthy occupant. It also plays home to a Quick Button in true iPhone style. However, it doesn’t offer the same versatility as the Apple device. It can only be used as a shutter button by tapping on it and a zoom switch by swiping on it. The zoom function works only when the phone is held in landscape mode. In portrait and selfie modes, the zoom functionality gets completely turned off. To sum up the design of the OPPO Find X8 Pro, it’s decently functional but not extraordinary in any way. Additionally, the fact that the phone gets IP68 and IP69 is great to know.

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Display and sound

OPPO Find X8 Pro Display

The OPPO Find X8 Pro’s 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display is a standout feature. With its 1600 nits HBM capability, it sets a new benchmark in outdoor visibility, effortlessly maintaining clarity even under direct sunlight. And for indoor usage, its 800 nits of typical brightness is more than enough. However, the display really shines when streaming HDR content. Its peak brightness of 4500 nits brings the visuals to life in a splendid fashion without being overly harsh on the eyes. It isn’t a surprise that HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are both supported by this panel, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re using Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+ Hotstar for streaming content.

The Find X8 Pro’s display bears a 120Hz refresh rate, and its LTPO technology ensures that the refresh rate adapts itself in an intuitive and seamless manner without you ever noticing the changes. While its resolution of 1264 x 2780 pixels doesn’t compete well against rivals offering QHD+ panels, the overall brilliance of the display doesn’t make you realise this downside. Coming to the sound, the hybrid speaker system delivers clean and balanced sound, even at high volumes. This, combined with the gorgeous display of the handset, makes it a good choice for those who consume a lot of content on their phones.

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Performance and battery life

OPPO Find X8 Pro Gaming

OPPO has chosen the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chip instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is clearly winning the benchmark wars. But this, by no means, makes the Dimensity 9400 chip a feeble chip. Its 3.63GHz octa-core processor, with its single-core score of 2,823 and multi-core score of 8,478 on Geekbench 6, beats all the flagship Android phones from last year, including the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. In fact, that multi-core score even beats the iPhone 16 Pro, which is quite a big deal. In the GPU test, the score of 20,322 is leagues above last year’s devices. And it even beats the score of the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

This flagship processor, combined with optimised software, allows the OPPO Find X8 Pro to deliver exceptional everyday performance. Thanks to 16GB RAM being standard, multitasking feels effortless, with apps launching instantly and running smoothly, while the 120Hz display ensures ultra-responsive interactions. For gaming, the phone shines with its powerful GPU and advanced cooling system, maintaining consistent frame rates even in graphically demanding titles. The combination of stunning visuals, tactile haptics, and minimal thermal throttling makes it a dream for gamers and a reliable powerhouse for everyday tasks.

If you’re all about long battery life and super-fast charging, the OPPO Find X8 Pro is a real winner. They managed to squeeze a huge 5,910mAh battery into this thing without making it bulky or heavy – impressive! Plus, they use this “silicon carbon” tech that keeps the battery cool, which means it should last longer in the long run. I easily got through a full day on the default settings, and even when I pushed it harder, it still held up. And if you’re not a heavy user, you’ll probably get even more juice out of it. Definitely a reliable phone for everyday use.

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Camera

OPPO Find X8 Pro Cameras

Four 50MP sensors sit on the back of the OPPO Find X8 Pro, forming its Hasselblad Master Camera System. The wide-angle camera is a 50 MP f/1.6 unit, while the dual periscope arrangement includes a 50MP f/2.0 camera and a 50MP f/2.6 camera. And then there’s the 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide camera. The result? A total of five focal lengths to choose from, namely 15mm (0.6x), 23mm (1x), 48mm (2x), and 73mm (3x), and 135mm (6x). Beyond this, the AI Telescope Zoom function takes over, letting you go up to 120x closer to your subjects.

As for how these cameras perform, there’s a lot to unravel here. The natural look that you expect from a Hasselblad-branded camera is visible most of the time, but I have to admit that the overall balance of all the photos leans more towards the warmer side. This tone shifts slightly to the cooler side only when the ultra-wide camera is at play; the other focal lengths continue to maintain it. I have absolutely no complaints about the dynamic range across all cameras, and the ample focal lengths add versatility to the camera experience, especially the up to 6x optical zoom. I was tempted to go beyond that many a time and can safely say that details and clarity are respectably maintained up to 20x. Beyond that, though, don’t expect much.

When it comes to low-light photography, this phone’s main camera returns very spectacular results. It is able to capture impressive amounts of detail with minimal noise in night mode. The ultrawide lens also performs well in low light, although sharpness may slightly diminish at the edges. Indoor photography under artificial lighting delivers vibrant and accurately coloured images, making it a versatile performer across various lighting conditions.

OPPO Find X8 Pro’s portrait photography benefits significantly from its Hasselblad partnership. The collaboration elevates the camera system, producing portraits with exceptional dynamic range and a vibrant yet authentic colour palette. Highlights and shadows are expertly balanced, and skin tones appear incredibly lifelike. However, the phone’s edge detection, while generally impressive, can occasionally falter. In scenarios with intricate edges, the software might struggle to perfectly separate the subject from the background, leading to minor inaccuracies.

The Find X8 Pro excels in videography, capturing smooth 4K footage at 60fps from both front and rear cameras. Video quality is exceptional, boasting sharp details, accurate colours, and effective stabilisation. A suite of creative tools empowers videographers with advanced adjustments and effects. In conclusion, the OPPO Find X8 Pro boasts a top-tier camera system. Its innovative hardware, intelligent AI enhancements, and collaboration with Hasselblad make it an ideal choice for photography enthusiasts.

OPPO Find X8 Pro: Software

OPPO Find X8 Pro Fingerprint Scanner

ColorOS 15 brings a few new things while keeping its old annoyances unchanged. By annoyances, I, of course, mean the bloatware. A bevvy of uninstall-worthy apps come bundled with the device. Fortunately, all that bloatware doesn’t affect the snappiness of the interface one bit. Circle to Search is a neat addition, and the same goes for tools like AI Unblur and AI Eraser. I wasn’t all that pleased with the AI Reflection Remover, though. I found it to do just around 70% of its job, and that too, without much finesse. Apart from these, the AI writing tools familiar to ColorOS users are present as well. The OPPO Find X8 Pro has embraced all of them and presents you with a comprehensive AI suite that can save time if you start using them in your daily lives.

Verdict

The OPPO Find X8 Pro stands as a powerful flagship, excelling in key areas like display quality, performance, and camera capabilities. With a vibrant 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display, excellent outdoor visibility, and HDR content support, it’s a content consumption powerhouse. The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset, paired with 16GB of RAM, ensures lightning-fast performance across tasks, including demanding gaming. Its camera system, enhanced by Hasselblad’s expertise, captures stunning images with excellent detail and dynamic range while offering versatile focal lengths.
However, it isn’t perfect. The design, while functional, lacks standout innovation, and the high price tag of Rs 99,999 might be a deterrent for some, just like the bloatware in ColorOS 15. Overall, it’s a solid contender in the flagship space, but prospective buyers should weigh its merits against competitors like the vivo X200 Pro and the OnePlus 13 before making a decision.
