When Comedy Meets Music

Writer’s Note: With our April issue centred around comedy and the spirit of fun, I thought it would be interesting to highlight music written and performed by comedians. It’s important to remember that stand-up comedians are people of many different sides and talents and these comedians are only a few examples. While these songs are mostly silly, it takes an awfully creative mind to make music that people can digest.

Bo Burnham – Bezos I

Bo Burnham

With a criticism of disaster capitalism, Bo Burnham’s ‘Bezos I’ was featured in his 2021 movie, Bo Burnham: Inside. The song is a satirical take on Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos’ life and journey, which became a huge hit on social media with Gen Z. The infectious energy and short length of the song is a genius tactic for catching the attention of social media. Burnham is known for his bold and satirical takes on world issues.

The Lonely Island – Threw It On The Ground

The Lonely Island – Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone (L to R)

The Lonely Island is an American comedy trio consisting of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. After their several features on Saturday Night Live, the trio ventured into more comedy music and ‘Threw It On The Ground’ is their most bizarre but since this is their most clean song, it is the perfect intro to them. The entire song never has a moment you won’t laugh at as it paints ridiculous scenarios with a strangely catchy beat.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – Smells Like Nirvana

“Weird Al” Yankovic

The definitive Godfather of musical comedy and parodies, “Weird Al” Yankovic’s discography is difficult to pin down with his extensive parodies. While his music is not for everybody, his comedy is a classic and his energy is unmatched within the industry. ‘Smells Like Nirvana’ was singled out as it seems impossible to make a parody of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ but Yankovic always challenged music norms.

Jack Black – Peaches

Jack Black

The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023 was a hit or a miss for most people but the highlight was Jack Black’s Bowser’s performance of the song, ‘Peaches.’ The repetitive but emotional song with dramatic screaming is both relatable and hilarious. The credit definitely goes to Jack Black’s natural charisma and comedic timing. Black’s discography is filled with wild songs and interesting vocals.

Kenny Sebastian – Die Trying

Kenny Sebastian

With talent and wit, Kenny Sebastian is a serious addition to this list with his song, ‘Die Trying.’ Featured on the album of the same name, Sebastian’s surprisingly smooth vocals and introspective lyrics show his worth as a musician and add layers to his career. His album features other meaningful songs and collaborative pieces. More than just his original songs, Sebastian also performs accurate impressions of famous musicians.

Garfunkel & Oates – Me, You and Steve

Garfunkel & Oates – Kate Micucci and Riki Rindhome (L to R)

If you’re online most of the time, this song might be familiar. Garfunkel & Oates are a folk duo with Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel) and Kate Micucci (Oates). Their upbeat melody with sarcastic lyrics in ‘Me, You and Steve’ is one of the most meme-worthy songs of the decade. The song points out the awkwardness of the third wheel and is often used humorously in videos where there are trios and one person stands out. Their other songs are similar, pointing out the behaviour of others most people would shy away from speaking out about.

Illusion Cakes and How They Fooled Us

Have you come across reels on Instagram where there’s an innocent object and someone suddenly cuts into it and reveals it’s actually cake? That’s right. This pandemic trend is still going strong. Talented bakers who dabble in arts began making Illusion Cakes – essentially edible cakes that are shaped and decorated to look like something entirely different, for example, a famous book or even a glass of water.

How did this trend start?

Illusion cakes in popularity, as many strange things did, during the pandemic when everyone had a lot more free time on their hands. Tuba Geçkil, a Turkish baker, is thought to have popularised it on social media with her hyper-realistic cakes that made everyone question their reality and trend #EverythingIsCake. Our feeds were filled with objects being cut into and turning out to be cake. The level of precision and accuracy wowed and fooled us all. Illusion cakes require time and effort, with a minimum of 4 hours for good results, and these bakers had social media questioning what they were seeing.

The trend is still thriving, with Netflix introducing a show titled, ‘Is It Cake?’ in March 2022 and it was renewed for a third season, premiering on 29th March 2024. The season will be cleverly titled, ‘Is It Cak3?’, only on Netflix. A few famous illusion cake bakers to follow are – Jonny Manganello (@thejonnycakes on Instagram), Ben Cullen (@the_bakeking on Instagram), Natalie Sideserf (@nataliesideserf on Instagram) and the trendsetter herself, Tuba Geçkil (@redrosecake_tubageckil on Instagram).

Best of Tuba Geçkil

The original trendsetter and creator, Tuba Geçkil, is a hidden gem within the food industry. The Turkish baker and owner of Red Rose Cake in Istanbul creates the most artsy pieces that could belong in a museum. With precise designs and beautiful visuals, it’s almost sad that her creations have to be eaten. She has recreated Johannes Vermeer’s painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and her canvas is her cake.

Jonny Manganello (also known as Jonny Cakes) is a Lebanese-American baker who was a contestant on Season 1 of Netflix’s ‘Is It Cake’ and now creates content around his baking. He’s also a popular guest on The Try Guys’ YouTube Channel as a judge for their food-related content. Jonny dabbles in optical illusions and brings fiction to life. He also sells simpler baking kits for illusion cakes.

Ben Cullen (known as The Bakeking) is a British baker whose bold creations keep the audience on their toes. His creations in particular are more grotesque. They challenge reality, showing that illusion cakes can dare to cross the line.

Rising Decibels: The Golden Era of Indian Rock Music (1980s-1990s)

In India, rock culture is nothing new. Indian Rock, or Raga Rock, entered the scene in the 1960s when everyone was listening to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Raga Rock is a kind of Indian and Western music blended together.

Where it began…

In the past, rock bands from India were referred to as beat ensembles. Bands like the Thunderbirds, Mystiks, Beat-X, and Flintstone made their mark in this genre in the 1960s and early 1970s. Singers with a reputation for covering songs include Ashwani Bali and Usha Uthup. It was at this period that well-known Western bands started releasing music heavily influenced by Indian classical music.

Where did it go after…

By the 1970s, rock music had made its way into Bollywood songs. This style was bravely attempted by composers, and the public enthusiastically accepted it. Still, only All India Radio played music; thus, the audience was minimal as well.

Indian musicians began producing independent rock songs and blending rock with traditional Indian music, although ‘filmi’ songs continued to dominate this genre. At this point, the independent Bengali band Moheener Ghoraguli from Kolkata began to play full-fledged rock music. Even though Moheener Ghoraguli only recorded in Bengali, they are perhaps the first rock band in India.

In 1984, a band known as Rock Machine became the first non-vernacular Indian rock band. Their debut album, Rock and Roll Renegade, hit the market in 1988, matching their inspiration from Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, etc.

The amazing enchantment persisted…

When MTV debuted in the early 1990s, Indian music fans were at last exposed to a wide range of newly emerging musical styles. Rock, thrash metal, grunge, punk, and other genres were now played on television, and none of them was rejected by the younger viewers. This shift in preference inspired upcoming musicians in India, who experimented with many genres. 1993 saw the launch of Rock Street Journal, India’s first publication devoted to Indian rock music, under the direction of Amit Saigal.

Additionally, bands like Skinny Alley, Pseudonym, Hobos, Agnee, Cassini’s Division, Parikrama, Motherjane, Indian Ocean, and others came into being during this period. In 1996, Parikrama won hearts with their famous song, But It Rained, a song devoted to the kidnappings that were occurring in the Kashmir Valley at the time.

Motherjane, a rock band from Cochin, made history by being the first Indian rock band to have songs performed internationally.

Sounds of the ‘90s…

In India, the 1990s were a booming decade. The tech boom was starting, liberalisation was just getting started, and Indians were realising they had more options than ever before. Additionally, indie rock bands were starting to gain popularity at this time thanks to publications like Rock Street Journal, MTV, and the Great Indian Rock Festival. The demise of Sonam Sherpa, who co-founded Parikrama in 1991 with Subir Malik in Delhi, has refocused attention on the heyday of Indian rock music. Here’s a list of a few Rock bands that thrashed the floor with their amazing music back in the day.

Indian Ocean (1990)

The group is credited with pioneering folk rock and fusion by fusing rock with classical ragas. Amit Kilam, Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty, and Rahul Ram comprised the original group. These days, the sole members of the original band are Kilam and Ram.

Indus Creed (1993)

In 1984, Uday Benegal, Jayesh Gandhi, Mark Selwyn, Zubin Balaporia, Mahesh Tinaikar, and Mark Menezes formed Rock Machine. However, in 1993, they renamed the ensemble and started experimenting with different sounds, incorporating Indian instruments such as the tabla. When Pretty Child, their debut video, was released in 1993, it became a tremendous smash and earned them an MTV Video Music Award.

Euphoria (1998)

The band’s 1998 first album included the song Dhoom Pichuck Dhoom, which you may remember if you were alive in the 1990s. After its debut, the “Hindi rock band” led by Palash Sen, a medical student, had an exponential rise in popularity. Euphoria performed at the UN in 2001, accompanied by the Pakistani band Junoon.

Pentagram (1996)

Vishal Dadlani, a founding member of the band, is now more well-known for composing soundtracks for Hindi films. However, Pentagram was well-known for its rock and then electronica music when the group first formed.

Skinny Alley (1996)

Jayashree Singh, her husband Gyan Singh, and Amyt Dutta founded Skinny Alley, one of the most well-known bands the city has produced. The group fused jazz, funk, and rock, and they had a late-night side project named Pinknoise.

Motherjane (1996)

Motherjane, who had originally formed to cover another band at a college event, went on to open for Machine Head and Megadeth. In the 2010 list of bands of the decade by Rock Street Journal, it came in first place.

Motherjane, a rock band from Cochin, made history by being the first Indian rock band to have songs performed internationally.

And it’s still Rocking

The Indian public has been influenced by rock culture for a long time. Filmmakers boldly use punk and rock in their compositions, whether they be heard locally, nationally, or internationally. And it turns out beautifully most of the time.

These days, there are internet resources like NH7, Headbangers India, IndianMusicMug, Unholy Maunder, IndianMusicRevolution, Indian Metal Scene, etc., that preserve the splendour of Indian rock.

However, music is amazing whether it comes from a digital device, your iPod, your father’s radio, or your grandmother’s gramophone. Rock will never stop rocking.

Best films reboot from the 80s/90s

The 1980s and ‘90s were the epitome of the ‘Hollywood Blockbuster’ Some would also say that Hollywood peaked during the ‘80s and ‘90s and what has followed since then has been a sad attempt to recreate the same magic while the original IPs take the backseat and reboots mint billions at the box office. The movie business might be littered with reboots and franchises as of now which can also be seen in the Indian film industry with the likes of the Cop Universe or the LCU, but there are some reboots which actually manage to hit the right spot. Beloved classics have turned to money spinners and that’s the world we’re living in right now but that does not take away the merit of some actually good reboot films.
So, here is a look at some of the best film reboots from the ‘80s and the ‘90s –

1. The 1980s: Ghostbusters (2016)

Okay, hear me out! I understand the 2016 Female-led Ghostbusters film did not impress a lot of people but we cannot deny that it was actually fun! The original “Ghostbusters” from 1984 is a beloved classic that defined the comedy genre for a generation. When the decision was made to create a reboot in 2016, it was met with both excitement and scepticism. The reboot, featuring an all-female cast led by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, took the spirit of the original and gave it a contemporary twist. While it faced its share of criticism, it introduced a new generation to the paranormal-hunting antics of the Ghostbusters while offering a fresh take on the story, complete with updated special effects and a unique comedic tone.

2. The 1990s: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

The Rock’s ‘Smoldering Intensity’ was enough to make this reboot a winner for me! “Jumanji,” originally released in 1995, was a family adventure film starring Robin Williams. It enchanted audiences with its magical board game that brought the jungle to life. In 2017, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” emerged as a modern reboot with a video game twist. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black took the reins in this action-packed and humour-filled adventure, creating a fresh narrative while paying homage to the late Robin Williams. The film’s clever approach to the concept of video games and body-swapping added a new layer of humour and excitement for both new and old fans.

3. The 1980s: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

“Mad Max” was a post-apocalyptic film franchise that began in the late ‘70s and continued into the ‘80s, with Mel Gibson playing the titular role. In 2015, “Mad Max: Fury Road” reimagined the world of Max Rockatansky with Tom Hardy as the new Max. This reboot, directed by George Miller (the creator of the original series), retained the gritty, high-octane spirit of the originals while introducing a new generation to the wild, chaotic, and visually stunning world of “Mad Max.” The film was celebrated for its practical effects and daring stunts, earning critical acclaim and becoming a hit at the box office.

4. The 1990s: Jurassic World (2015)

“Jurassic Park,” directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993, was a groundbreaking film that brought dinosaurs back to life on the big screen. Over two decades later, “Jurassic World” reignited the franchise, transporting us to the fully operational dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar. With a new cast led by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film combined nostalgia with thrilling action and the awe-inspiring spectacle of prehistoric creatures. The film was a box office sensation and breathed new life into the Jurassic Park series. Too bad, the third entry in the Jurassic World franchise failed as a cohesive film even with the original cast returning!

5. The 1990s: IT (2017)

Stephen King’s “IT,” originally adapted into a TV miniseries in 1990, is a classic horror story featuring the terrifying clown, Pennywise. The 2017 film adaptation, directed by Andy Muschietti, brought the story to a new generation. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise captivated audiences, and the film successfully captured the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of King’s novel. With its skilful blend of nostalgia and modern horror, “IT” was a critical and commercial hit, ensuring that the tale of the Losers’ Club and Pennywise continued to haunt the nightmares of moviegoers.

There is a reason why we call blockbuster films from the ‘80s and ‘90s as ‘Classics’ They carry an essence which cannot be recreated no matter how many reboots are launched. However, the younger generation requires independent representation which these reboots bring. I hope with time reboots stop being pure cash grabs and put some value to their classic counterparts

Retro Binge – Shows From 80’s & 90’s

I did not grow up in the ‘80s and perhaps was too young to understand English in my growing days. It was only when I was in junior college that I got introduced to ‘foreign’ content, especially TV shows and what followed was an unhealthy amount of content consumption. Be it Friends or The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I watched everything I could get my hands on. I can give up everything in order to experience these shows again in life but knowing that is not a possibility, I can at least recommend them to you. Here are some of the best TV shows from the ‘80s and ‘90s you can binge-watch right now –

1. THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR (1990-1996)

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is a timeless classic that brought the infectious charm and comedic genius of Will Smith into our living rooms. The show’s premise of a streetsmart teenager, Will, moving from a tough Philadelphia neighbourhood to live with his affluent aunt and uncle in BelAir, provided endless humour and heartwarming moments. With memorable characters like the lovable butler Geoffrey and the preppy Carlton, the show was a masterclass in blending comedy with social commentary. It addressed issues of race, class, and family dynamics, making it as relevant today as it was in the ‘90s. Will Smith’s charisma and comedic timing remain a highlight, making this show an enduring favourite. Too bad the reputation of our Fresh Price Will Smith has now been tainted by the infamous Oscar incident and the tumultuous relationship with his wife but the show remains amazing nonetheless.

2. FRIENDS (1994-2004)

RIP Matthew Perry! “Friends” is the epitome of a show that has stood the test of time. This beloved sitcom about a group of friends living in New York City has been a cultural touchstone for multiple generations. With its relatable characters, witty humour, and exploration of the ups and downs of adult friendships and relationships, “Friends” continues to be a bingewatching favourite on streaming platforms. The show’s themes of love, loyalty, and the search for one’s identity are universal and continue to resonate with viewers today. Its iconic catchphrases, such as “How you doin’?” and “We were on a break,” are still part of our everyday lexicon.

3. THE X-FILES (1993-2002, 2016-2018)

“The X-Files” was a groundbreaking series that blended science fiction, horror, and paranormal investigations. The show’s core duo, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, had a dynamic that was both intellectually stimulating and emotionally compelling. Their pursuit of unexplained phenomena and government conspiracies kept viewers on the edge of their seats, and the show’s “Monster of the Week” episodes allowed for endless creativity and suspense. “The X-Files” showcased a perfect blend of scepticism and belief, exploring themes of trust, the unknown, and the pursuit of truth. Even after its initial run, the show returned for two revival seasons, proving its enduring appeal.

4. THE GOLDEN GIRLS (1985-1992)

“The Golden Girls” is a prime example of a show that transcends time and age. This classic sitcom featured four older women living together in Miami, providing viewers with a refreshing and hilarious perspective on friendship, ageing, and life’s challenges. The show’s witty writing and strong performances from its leading ladies, including Bea Arthur and Betty White, still make it a hit today. Its discussions on important issues such as sexuality, ageing, and relationships were ahead of their time and remain relevant in the 21st century. “The Golden Girls” continues to warm the hearts of audiences young and old, proving that good comedy is truly timeless.

5. THE SIMPSONS (1989-PRESENT)

“The Simpsons” is an animated juggernaut that has been entertaining audiences for over three decades. The satirical show follows the lives of the Simpson family in the fictional town of Springfield and provides incisive commentary on society, politics, and pop culture. With its vast array of memorable characters and clever humour, “The Simpsons” has remained a cultural touchstone, adapting and evolving with the times. It has tackled various societal issues while maintaining its iconic humour and irreverence. The show’s creators have managed to keep it fresh and relevant, making it a beloved staple of television for multiple generations.

HONORARY MENTION: TWO AND A HALF MEN (2003-2015)

While “Two and a Half Men” doesn’t hail from the 1980s or 1990s, it’s worth an honorary mention for its significant impact on television during the 2000s. This popular sitcom, created by Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, featured the comedic talents of Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Angus T. Jones. The show’s humour and often risqué content made it a memorable part of the television landscape during its 12-season run. Though it came a bit later, “Two and a Half Men” still holds a special place in the hearts of viewers who fondly remember the comedy of the 2000s. The 1980s and 1990s delivered a treasure trove of television shows that, like fine wine, have aged with grace and continue to captivate audiences. Whether you’re in the mood for heartwarming sitcoms, gripping mysteries, or mind-bending science fiction, these two decades offered a diverse array of timeless classics.

Sweet Nostalgia – Cartoons Which Shaped A Generation

We would return from school around 3 PM in the afternoon having only two hours to ourselves before running for tuition at 5 PM. The weak shoulders of my younger self surely grew weary under the weight of my school and tuition bag but there was one thing which kept me going – watching television. Sure, there are kids who play cricket, and some play musical instruments. But my indulgence of choice was always watching the television, especially cartoons, and why wouldn’t it be? The ‘90s was undoubtedly the golden era for animation.

Animation left a great mark on the hearts and minds of a generation. The ‘90s is when globalization and modernization of the Indian culture incepted which led to a diverse range of animated shows making their way to the country. Here’s a trip down memory lane where we chart the course of all the animated shows which impacted our childhood.

SCOOBY DOO

I was too innocent to realize back in the day that Shaggy was probably a big-time stoner! Scooby Doo- the classic animation show has stood the test of time and still reigns supreme when it comes to horror comedy. The show revolved around the adventures of four teenagers and a talking dog as they solve mysteries. “Scooby-Doo, where are you?” is still something I catch myself vibing on from time to time. There are many infamous reboots and rehashes of the show with Mindy Kaling’s ‘Velma’ being the latest offender, but there is nothing as entertaining as the classic show.

JOHNNY BRAVO

Sometimes I do wonder if my relentless and delusional confidence comes from watching Johnny Bravo as a kid. I also think that Johnny Bravo is a role model for many self absorbed men we see in our lives. Jokes apart, his comedy antics and a way to charm women allowed a rather narcissistic character to be loved universally. Only if Johnny Bravo hit the leg day, we would have fewer gym freaks with bulging chests and chicken legs.

POWERPUFF GIRLS

Toxic masculinity was never something I could follow or entertain as I grew up watching Powerpuff Girls which taught me how women can kick ass! The show featured three superpowered sisters named Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles who worked together to fight the supervillains in their hometown. Mojo Jojo still stands tall as one of the most maniacal characters ever put into animation.

POPEYE

Popeye – The Sailor Man was the Spinach-munching character who made his way into the hearts of kids with his charm. Even parents loved the character as he would promote eating green vegetables. The show revolved around Popeye’s battles against his arc nemesis Blutto as they fought for love of Olive. It had some out-of-the-box action sequences with Blutto always coming up with ways to tackle Popeye, only to get trashed by Popeye once he’s had his green edible!

TOM & JERRY

It is actually sad to see that the younger generation does not love or have even watched Tom & Jerry as much as my generation did. A literal game of cat and mouse which subliminally taught us life – Fight or lose! The classic slapstick humour of this series allowed kids to experience hysterical laughter, something no other series in my opinion has ever been able to capture.

I hope reading through all the cartoon shows from the past has allowed you to reminisce about your childhood. Sure, I’ve missed out on some major shows like Pokemon, Shinchan, Doraemon, and even Ninja Hattori but that does not mean you cannot revisit them yourself. Go, indulge in some of the cartoons from your past right now!

Changing Landscape : The Television Revolution

The 1980s and 1990s were transformative decades for India, marked by significant socio-economic and cultural changes. One of the most influential factors contributing to this transformation was the Television Revolution. The advent of television during this period had a profound impact on Indian society, ushering in a new era of communication, entertainment, and information dissemination.

TELEVISION PIONEERS:

In the early 1980s, Doordarshan, India’s state-owned television network, was the primary source of television content. With just a handful of channels and limited programming, it played a vital role in shaping the nation’s collective consciousness. Iconic shows like “Ramayan” and “Mahabharat” captivated millions, making Sunday mornings a ritual for Indian families. These programs not only entertained but also strengthened the cultural and religious bonds among diverse communities.

PRIVATE TELEVISION CHANNELS:

The late 1980s and early 1990s witnessed the emergence of private television channels, a watershed moment in Indian television history. Channels like Zee TV, Star TV, and later Sony Entertainment Television introduced a new dimension to entertainment. They diversified content, offering a wide range of shows, from family dramas to game shows, news programs, and movies. This expansion not only increased the variety of programming but also generated economic opportunities, spurring growth in the entertainment industry.

INFORMATION REVOLUTION:

Television also played a pivotal role in disseminating information to a vast and diverse population. The evening news on Doordarshan became a trusted source of information. During the 1990s, the opening up of the Indian economy led to a proliferation of news channels, such as NDTV and Aaj Tak. These channels made the news more accessible, with 24-hour coverage and real-time reporting, bringing national and international events directly into Indian living rooms.

CULTURAL IMPACT:

Television became a mirror to Indian society, reflecting its aspirations, challenges, and transformations. Iconic shows like “Circus,” “Hum Log,” and “Buniyaad” addressed societal issues and contributed to social awareness. Moreover, television influenced fashion, popular culture, and even language. Phrases from popular shows, like “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” and “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” became part of everyday conversations.

However, the television revolution was not without its challenges. Critics argued that excessive commercialization and sensationalism in news programming eroded journalistic integrity. The influx of soap operas often centered on regressive themes, leading to debates about the influence of television on societal values.

The television revolution of the ‘80s and 90s dramatically transformed India. It brought entertainment, information, and economic opportunities to a rapidly evolving society. Television became an integral part of Indian life, influencing culture, economics, and politics. As we look back on these decades, it’s evident that the Television Revolution played a pivotal role in shaping the India we know today.

Barbenheimer: How Two Blockbusters Revived Cinema

Being Indian film fanatics, it is common for us to witness two big films going head to head against each other at the box office. It was just recently when two tentpole blockbuster films, Gadar 2 and Oh My God 2 clashed at the box office with both emerging as successes. However, this phenomenon is quite a rarity in the West. Major Hollywood studios do not shy away from shuffling release dates to avoid clashing with other major films. As a result, audiences are yet to witness both DC and Marvel Studios releasing their major films on the same day. While DC and Marvel are juggernaut IPs which generate billions in revenue, studios do not generally pitch even their non-superhero blockbusters against each other. Well, that was until July 2023 when the landscape of blockbuster cinema was changed forever with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer!

The summer of 2023 at the cinema was a lacklustre season where films tanked left and right. Major blockbuster franchise films failed to impress the audiences. Be it Vin Diesel’s family affair with Fast X, DC’s self-proclaimed cinematic pinnacle The Flash, or Harrison Ford’s return as the iconic Indiana Jones, nothing made a major mark at the domestic box office. To save grace, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Across the Spider-Verse did perform well at the box office saving Hollywood from a total downfall. However, nobody expected the storm which was brewing up in the form of Oppenheimer and Barbie.

Nolan’s highly anticipated biopic of Robert J Oppenheimer was a topic of interest amongst moviegoers ever since its announcement. To add fuel to the fire, the news of the director blowing up actual bombs to capture the true essence of an atomic explosion took the hype of the film to the next level.

On the other hand, we had pop-culture darlings Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling taking over the roles of Barbie and Ken. The first teaser of Barbie recreated the iconic opening scene from 2001:A Space Odyssey which intrigued audience members. The teaser was followed by a peppy trailer and a massive promotional campaign where it felt like the entire USA was painted pink.

The equal anticipation around these films coined the term ‘Barbenheimer’

Whenever two films release on the same day, audiences are usually divided between the two. It is always “Which one will you watch?” and never “Which one will you watch first?” which was the case for Barbie and Oppenheimer. It was a celebration for true cine fans for whom July 21st became the day of the ‘Barbenheimer’ double feature. I and many film-loving people like me spend their entire day at the cinema watching the two films back to back.

Barbenheimer was all over the internet with fans celebrating Barbie wearing pink and having a change of clothes to a black outfit and walking straight in to watch Oppenheimer. Both films were loved by critics and audiences alike which led to box office history.

The opening weekends of Barbie and Oppenheimer collectively brought in $244.5 million. While Barbie brought in a massive $162 million, Oppenheimer scored $82.5 million. This was the first time since the pandemic that the box office witnessed such humongous numbers at the domestic level. At the time of writing, Barbie stands at $1 billion at the global box office, whereas, Oppenheimer stands at $600 million.

Barbie has gone on to create history at the box office making Greta Gerwig the first woman to have a sole directing credit on a billion-dollar film. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan successfully managed to depict the horrors humans are capable of causing in a twisted tale which was widely accepted around the world. India showed more love to Oppenheimer than Barbie where the film has garnered a massive 117 crore box office at the time of writing. If films like Barbie and Oppenheimer continue to shine at the box office, then there won’t be any doubts about the cinema business going anywhere!

How AI & Deepfakes are ruining entertainment

Lights, camera, deepfakes! Hollywood, the epitome of glitz and glamour, is no stranger to pushing boundaries and embracing technological advancements. As AI and deepfake technology continue to evolve at a breakneck pace, the entertainment industry finds itself at a crossroads of excitement and trepidation. Over the past few years, fans of Hollywood films have been subjected to some visual scrutiny. It was The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale which introduced an AI-generated young Luke Skywalker who looked like he was made out of rubber. Just recently, watching The Flash in the cinemas was yet another painful experience due to the jarring VFX effects which were later revealed to be generated and enhanced with the contribution of AI. Let’s embark on a whimsical exploration of the potential negative impacts of AI and deep fakes on Hollywood, where reality and fiction dance a delicate tango.

The Uncanny Valley of Illusions

Deepfake technology, with its ability to seamlessly replace one face with another, offers limitless possibilities for storytelling. But what happens when we can no longer trust our eyes? Picture an audience bewildered, desperately trying to distinguish between a genuine actor and a hyper-realistic AI-generated doppelgänger. We’ve already had glimpses of this phenomenon when Hollywood flirted with deep fakes in films like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” where the late Peter Cushing was digitally resurrected as Grand Moff Tarkin. While the visual effects were impressive, it left us pondering, “Was that truly Peter Cushing, or just an impeccably crafted digital resurrection?” Rogue One’s implementation of AI to recreate human characters opened a can of worms in Hollywood. In my opinion, recreating Christopher Reeves’ Superman with the help of AI for the finale sequence in The Flash was inhuman, as the actor passed away long back. The line between the real and the virtual is becoming blurred, treading dangerously close to the dreaded ‘uncanny valley.’

The Rise of AI Directors

Imagine a future where a robot director, clad in a bowtie and wielding a pocket protector, calls the shots in a Hollywood boardroom. Armed with sophisticated algorithms and an encyclopedic knowledge of film history, this artificial auteur analyzes audience preferences and calculates the perfect formula for blockbuster success. Who needs human intuition when a machine can predict it all? As AI-powered filmmakers emerge, we may find ourselves questioning the very essence of auteurship. Will we witness an Oscar-winning film directed by a machine, with acceptance speeches consisting of lines of binary code? While the thought may be met with a mix of humour and scepticism, it raises intriguing questions about the convergence of creativity and artificial intelligence.

A Deepfake Renaissance

The allure of deep fakes goes beyond mere facial manipulation. With AI mastering the art of mimicking an actor’s voice, performances can be fabricated entirely. Imagine an AI algorithm breathing life into Marlon Brando’s iconic voice, delivering new lines that the virtual Brando himself improvises. Suddenly, the entertainment industry is flooded with beloved actors who never age, never retire, and whose performances can be resurrected long after they’ve left the stage. While the concept is undeniably fascinating, it also raises concerns about the boundaries between homage and identity theft, blurring the line between authenticity and deception. Will we find ourselves in a world where film historians debate whether a specific performance was by the real Al Pacino or his AI-generated counterpart?

Stunt Doubles Out of Work

Action-packed movies have traditionally relied on fearless stunt performers to bring jaw-dropping sequences to life. However, with AI and motion-capture technology advancements, we may witness the rise of digital daredevils. Envision a world where Tom Cruise’s digital alter ego defies gravity without breaking a sweat, leaving the real Tom Cruise comfortably perched on a green-screened sofa, sipping a virtual piña colada. While it may save lives and production costs, it risks turning Hollywood into a realm where danger is pixelated, and the adrenaline of real stunts becomes a distant memory. Are we ready for a world where the only risk involved is a computer crashing mid-action sequence, resulting in a catastrophic outbreak of virtual chaos?

As AI and deep fake technology continue to evolve, their impact on Hollywood and the entertainment industry cannot be ignored. From the blurred lines of reality to the potential replacement of human creativity, the quirky perils of this new era invite both excitement and unease. While we might chuckle at the thought of an AI director or marvel at digital actors defying the laws of physics, it is crucial to reflect on the delicate balance between innovation and preserving the human touch. In this brave new world, we can utilize AI and deep fake technology as valuable tools without sacrificing the essence of the art form that has captivated audiences for over a century.
