Switch 2 Speculation Intensifies as New Patent Reveals AI Upscaling Potential

As we enter 2025, the excitement surrounding the highly anticipated Switch 2 is reaching new heights. This week, a newly published patent from Nintendo sparked discussions about the console’s capabilities, particularly its use of AI-upscaling technology designed to enhance game visuals without excessive storage.

The patent, officially titled “Systems and Methods for Machine Learned Image Conversion,” was originally filed on July 13, 2023, and was brought to light by gaming consultant Laura Kate Dale. It details a sophisticated software-based AI-upscaling system reminiscent of Nvidia’s DLSS and Sony’s PSSR, which aims to improve image quality by leveraging machine learning rather than relying solely on hardware processing power.

Nintendo’s titles on the current Switch are renowned for their optimization, with major releases like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom occupying only 18.2GB. However, higher-resolution textures typically demand more space. For instance, the patent suggests that native 4K textures could push a game’s install size up to 60GB, while a 1080p version using AI upscaling could be limited to just 20GB – well below the current 32GB cap for Switch cartridges.

In addition to the patent excitement, rumours about Switch 2’s hardware are swirling. Recent leaks have allegedly revealed photos of the console’s motherboard, igniting debates among fans and industry experts about the semiconductor manufacturing processes used and the potential power of the new chip.

While speculation runs rampant, one thing is clear. Until Nintendo officially unveils the Switch 2 with its complete list of specifications and features, it remains uncertain how its power will measure up against the existing, seven-year-old Switch hardware. History has shown that Nintendo excels at maximizing performance from more economical technology, and fans are eager to see what innovations the company will bring to the gaming landscape with its next console.
