WhatsApp’s Latest Update Brings Voice Note Transcription to Your Fingertips

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages into text. This addition caters to those moments when listening to voice notes is inconvenient, such as during a commute or in noisy environments.

“Transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages,” the Meta-owned messaging platform confirmed in a press release on November 21. However, it remains unclear whether these transcripts are protected by end-to-end encryption.

The Voice Note Transcript feature is set to roll out globally in the coming weeks. Initially, it will support a limited number of languages, although WhatsApp has yet to disclose which ones. Additionally, the company has not clarified if AI powers the transcription process.

How to Enable and Use the Transcription Feature

To activate the feature, users need to navigate to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts. Here, they can toggle the feature on or off and choose the preferred transcription language. Once enabled, generating a transcript is simple. Long-press on the desired voice note and select the ‘Transcribe’ option from the pop-up menu. The transcription will appear directly on the app for easy reading.

WhatsApp’s Growing Feature Set

Meta has consistently enhanced WhatsApp’s functionality, solidifying its position as a versatile communication tool. India, with over 500 million active users, remains its largest market, driving innovation for diverse user needs.

Recently, WhatsApp introduced exciting updates for video calls, including filters and custom backgrounds. These playful features, tailored for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, transform video calling into an engaging and personalized experience.

In addition, WhatsApp rolled out an automatic draft-saving feature earlier this month. This handy update ensures that unfinished messages are saved as drafts, making it easy to resume conversations later. A draft indicator serves as a subtle reminder when you reopen the app. To access these features, ensure your app is updated to the latest version. With the Voice Note Transcript feature and continuous upgrades, WhatsApp proves its commitment to evolving with user needs, keeping its platform both functional and fun.
