Apple has officially rolled out the iOS 18.2 Public Beta 1 update for iPhone, following closely behind the developer beta released just under two weeks ago. This latest update broadens the reach of Apple Intelligence, the company’s advanced AI suite, bringing new tools and enhancements to Apple’s ecosystem. Key highlights include Image Playground, Genmoji, Siri’s new ChatGPT integration, and exclusive camera features for the iPhone 16 series.
iOS 18.2 Public Beta 1 – Unveiling New AI-Powered Features
Apple initially teased several AI-driven innovations at its WWDC 2024 event in June, although only a select few made it to the public beta stage. Notably, Image Playground and Siri’s ChatGPT integration stood out as highly anticipated features, but until now, they remained unavailable in Apple’s beta updates.
With the launch of iOS 18.2 Public Beta 1, Apple introduced Image Playground, a dedicated app that enables users to generate AI images using descriptive prompts and creative references. Users can select someone from their Photos app as inspiration and experiment with various art styles to craft unique images.
Additionally, the Genmoji feature allows for the creation of custom emojis using similar techniques. These images and emojis can be easily shared across apps like Messages, Notes, and Keynote. The update also brings in Image Wand, a new tool that transforms rough sketches in the Notes app into polished images using Apple Intelligence’s generative AI capabilities.
A significant upgrade is the ChatGPT integration with Siri. Now, iPhone users can tap into OpenAI’s large language model to receive richer, more context-aware responses, including insights about photos and documents. ChatGPT also becomes a writing companion within the Apple Intelligence suite, providing users with options to refine or completely rewrite text based on prior context. This feature, however, requires an optional sign-in. iPhone users with paid ChatGPT accounts can access advanced OpenAI models with fewer limitations on usage.
For users of the iPhone 16 series, iOS 18.2 introduces exclusive camera enhancements under Apple’s Visual Intelligence. This feature, which functions similarly to Google Lens, enables users to point the camera at an object to either search the web or use ChatGPT to obtain detailed information about what they’re viewing. iOS 18.2 Public Beta 1 sets the stage for Apple’s AI vision, combining intelligent creativity with functionality that seamlessly integrates into the iPhone experience.
