Tata Technologies and BMW have established a 50:50 joint venture called BMW TechWorks India, aimed at enhancing BMW’s software capabilities in response to the automotive industry’s increasing focus on digital and software solutions. This new entity will specialize in developing software-defined vehicle (SDV) technology and IT services for BMW’s global operations.
Warren Harris, CEO of Tata Technologies, highlighted at the launch event that this partnership reinforces India’s role as a key provider of engineering and digital services to the global market. He emphasized that the automotive industry is experiencing a major transformation due to the growth of electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies.
The partnership arises as automakers are placing greater emphasis on software to fuel innovation in their vehicles. Christoph Grote, Senior VP of Electronics and Software at BMW, stated, “Software is actually one core ingredient; a car that’s not connected is almost like a car that’s broken down.” Warren Harris, CEO of Tata Technologies, pointed out that the automotive industry is experiencing a significant transformation fueled by the growth of electric vehicles and advancements in autonomous driving technologies.
This joint venture reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are competing to create next-generation vehicles that can incorporate advanced software systems while addressing the rising demand for autonomous features and smooth connectivity.
Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover are already key automotive clients of Tata Technologies. As a global engineering services firm, Tata Technologies provides product development and digital solutions to original equipment manufacturers worldwide. It possesses specialized knowledge in the automotive sector and uses this expertise to assist clients in related fields, including aerospace, transportation, and heavy machinery construction.
Aditya Khera, CEO of BMW TechWorks India, highlighted that the joint venture will promote innovation in automotive software and essential systems. Set to launch in early November, the venture will start with more than 100 skilled employees from Tata Technologies, with plans to expand as operations grow in various locations across India and Europe.
The joint venture’s technology will support various brands within the BMW group, including MINI and Rolls-Royce. The leadership team for the venture will be located in Pune, with teams spread across three main sites: Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai.
