The 2024 Paris Olympics just began, and it’s been thrilling so far. From swimming to gymnastics, there’s no end to the excitement and talent of the athletes. In this year’s Olympics, a total of 112 Indian athletes are competing across 16 sports. Within less than a week of its commencement, India has won 3 medals by the effort and talent of these 3 Olympic athletes.
Who are they and what did they win?
Manu Bhaker
Bronze – Women’s 10m air pistol shooting, Bronze – Mixed team 10m air pistol shooting
Manu Bhaker, a young shooting sensation, is set to compete in multiple events. Her consistent performances in international competitions make her a medal hopeful for India. At the Asian Games, she won the team gold for India, and she was just 16 years old when she won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she won bronze in both women’s 10m air pistol shooting and mixed team 10m air pistol shooting, along with Sarabjot Singh. She achieved this at the young age of 22.
Fun fact: She also excels at other sports, such as Huyen langlon, a Manipuri martial art, as well as boxing, tennis and skating.
Sarabjot Singh
Bronze – Mixed team 10m air pistol shooting
Sarabjot Singh is a young sport shooter from Haryana who specialises in the 10m air pistol. He, along with Manu Bhaker, won bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol shooting. Singh has previously won several accolades at the Asian Games. During the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, he won gold at the 10m air pistol with his team. He also won silver at the mixed 10m air pistol at the same event. His talent is certainly one to watch out for.
Swapnil Kusale
Bronze – Men’s 50m rifle 3 positions shooting
Making his Olympic debut with a bang, Swapnil Kusale hails from Pune. He earned the bronze medal with a total of 451.7 in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions shooting. Kusale has made his mark in shooting by achieving notable results at several national and international competitions. He earned his place in the spotlight by securing a gold medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi. This achievement was a significant milestone in his career and demonstrated his skill and dedication to the sport.
His bronze makes it the third win for India so far.
